Prof. Smart Obiora

Smart Chika Obiora holds a M.Sc. degree in Geology, with specialization in Mineralogy and Petrology and a Ph.D. in Geology, with specialization in Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He has published several articles in reputable local and international journals. He has received several national and international awards of excellence in his field of specialization. Smart Chika Obiora belongs to many Professional bodies; he is currently the General Secretary of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society and a COMEG-registered Geoscientist; Life member, Association of Geoscientists for International Development (AGID) and Member, Geological Society of Africa. He has rendered services to many bodies outside the University as follows: Supervisor/Resource person, Geological Mapping of NE-SE region (especially Kashimbila and Gashaka sheets) by Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Member/Editorial Adviser, NGSA Editorial Board of NGSA publications, Supervisor/Resource person to NGSA on Petrographic Studies;  Mentor/Resource person, EXXONMOBIL Mapping Project under the University Partnering Programme; Member, Climate Change Academic Research Group, Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja, Nigeria, Member/Geologist, National Technical Proposal Drafting Committee for the Nigerian Food Security Information and Early Warning System (NFSIEWS); Panel Member of Accreditation team of the National Universities Commission; Examiner, Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) Professional Examination; Member, IGCP-SIDA-UNESCO Project 606 on addressing the Environmental Health Impacts of major and abandoned mines in Sub-Saharan Africa, 2011-2014; Project leader in Nigeria, UNESCO-SIDA Field Experimentation Team on Environmental and Health Impacts of Abandoned Mines in Sub-Saharan African Countries(http://www.abandonedminesafrica.org).
